Hey guys! I'm just practicing with this blog thing. I found these articles about teachers and social media and how much is too much. I would like for you to answer this question for me. Just jot down some ideas and send them my way. What is your currrent knowledge of rules for teachers using social media as a teacher. What are your rights?
Have to be honest and say I only know that you should first and foremost guard student privacy (like not post pics of students or info about them without consent). For your second Q: I have rights? ;->
ReplyDeleteWe just took a short training course on social media at work, so I can answer from that point of view, but I don't think that's helpful to you. :)
ReplyDeleteWith regard to education, I think it's bad form (or maybe even illegal/immoral?) to "friend" current students on social media.
My personal opinion (and I don't know the laws/policies) is that social media should be private and separate from schools or jobs, though I know that realistically this is difficult. I also acknowledge that social media can often be a cry for help from students, as well as a way for adults to monitor for dangerous behavior. But where is the line?
This is a very tricky subject. Yes, I agree student information should be guarded. I do not agree with teachers that "friend" their current students. I mean come on get a life and get friends that are your own age. I believe that educators that engage in this type of behavior are really asking for legal trouble down the road and a possible career change.
ReplyDeleteI have had minimal exposure to any type of formal training about social media. I concur that educators should avoid engaging with parents and students through social media. I do know teachers whom have created shared forums for their classrooms, such as blogs and websites, but I view this very differently from other forms of social media.
